Conflagration

by Betmae

Whiffs of smoke cloudy haze
Assumed far off wildfire continued my daze
Looked straight ahead to blue morning focused gaze

Heard crackling and popping
High heat sweating sopping
Committed to my stagnation
But finally turned and blown over by conflagration
Your playing with matches you thought you could control
Fireballs explode consume my body and soul
You watched your family pulled churning into the pyre
Finally snapped to action with buckets and hoses to put out the fire

Thought we were safe despite our clashes
Now you’re covered in soot and I’m burned to ashes

Stonewashed Jeans

by Betmae

eighties era stone washed jeans

sturdy thick denim
button up fly
a few tatters
steady solid fit

Did you say “mom jeans”?

new jeans have fancy labels
gold stitching, rhinestone pockets
intriguing criss cross belt loops
stretchy, clingy fabric

just right for dancing and partying

discard old jeans
dirty dog rag!

feel young, fashionable, intoxicated

starts to feel too tight
chafes
too much extra care
but can’t peel off

finally extricate
locate old dirty lump of denim

wash up but gaping ragged tear
get out thimble, needle and thread
